Baseball Wins Fourth Straight Behind Curley and Massielo
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –
Hunter Curley tossed a complete-game shutout and
Justin Massielo led the offense with three hits as the Arcadia University baseball team won its fourth-straight contest, a 9-0 win over the University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights improved to 4-1 with the win.
Arcadia got on the board in the top of the first when
Emilio Pallante singled to right-center, moved to second on a Massielo single, and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on an error.
The Knights doubled their lead in the top of the second when
Aaron Oswalt led off with a triple into the right-center gap and scored on a fielder's choice from
Zachary Sekelick.
Massielo singled to lead off the top of the seventh and oved to second on a walk to
Connor Cheeseman, with both runners advancing on a sacrifice bunt by
Joseph Kumar. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Sekelich was hit by a pitch bringing home Massielo, followed by a walk to
Matthew Sot that scored Cheeseman to make the score 4-0.
The Knights broke the game open with five runs in the top of the ninth. Curley led off with a walk and stole second after which Sekelich was hit by a pitch. After
Matt Donchez pinch-ran for Sekelich, both runners advanced on a double-steal and Sot walked to load the bases.
Nick Opalkowski walked to score Curley and
Alex Madera reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Donchez. After Madera stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, Pallante singled to score Sot and Madera. Massielo doubled to put runners at second and third before Cheeseman singed to score Pallante and reach the final score.
Curley was dominant in his first win of the season, scattering six hits over nine scoreless innings with zero walks and four strikeouts.
Massielo finished 3-for-6 with one run scored while Pallante went 2-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI's and Cheeseman was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Arcadia finishes its trip to Virginia on Sunday when it faces Stevenson for an 11:00 a.m. non-conference game.
