Offense Explodes as Softball Splits with York (Pa.)
GLENSIDE – After a heartbreaking loss in game one, the Arcadia University softball team exploded for ten runs in the bottom of the fourth of game two, leading the Knights to a 13-1 win in five innings after a 9-8 loss in game one against York College of Pennsylvania in non-conference action from Blankley Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Arcadia improved to 13-4 after the split.
In the top of the first of game two, York got runners to second and third with two outs but
Juliana Presto was able to coax a pop out to escape the jam.
In the top of the second, the Spartans led off reaching on an error before a double was hit off the wall, but as the runner came around third
Nathalia Diianni threw a perfect strike to
Megan Sooy, who relayed a laser home to
Morgan Tripodi to nab the runner and keep York off the board. The Spartans put runners at second and third with two out for the second inning in a row but Presto froze the hitter on strike three getting out of another jam.
Arcadia got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third. Diianni hit a one-out double down the left field line and moved to third on an infield single by
Serena Goodridge. After a walk by
Megan Klose,
Effie Jamanis singled to right-center bringing home Diianni, followed by a Tripodi single scoring Goodridge and an infield single off the bat of
Allison LaRochelle scoring Klose.
The Spartans got on the board with a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth.
The Knights put the game away with a ten-run bottom of the fourth.
Madi Costigan reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single from Diianni. After Sooy reached on a fielder's choice that erased Diianni at second putting runners at first and third, Goodridge doubled scoring Costigan and moving Sooy to third. Klose singled to left bringing home Sooy and E. Jamanis singled to left scoring Goodridge. After a pitching change, Tripodi doubled bringing in
Morgan Marchesani, who pinch ran for Klose, and E. Jamanis. LaRochelle then singled to left bringing home Tripodi followed by
Zoey Ritter, who reached on an error that moved LaRochelle to second. Costigan reached on a fielder's choice that put out Ritter at second, and after stealing second, Diianni reached on an error that brought home LaRochelle and Costigan. Sooy doubled to the gap in right-center scoring Diianni and Goodridge doubled to center bringing home Sooy to finish the scoring.
Presto improved to 8-2 allowing one run across 5.0 innings on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Tripodi finished game two 3-for-3 with three RBI's and one run scored while Goodridge was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Diianni, Klose, and LaRochelle all had two-hit efforts for the Knights in game two.
In game one, the Spartans opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first.
Arcadia responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Costigan led off with an infield single and moved to third when Diianni doubled down the left field line. Sooy singled to bring home Costigan followed by a run-scoring single by Goodridge bringing in Diianni and a double to right-center by Klose scoring Sooy.
Sooy added to the lead with a one-out solo home run to make the score 4-2 in the bottom of the third.
York took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth before the Knights tied the score in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly off the bat of E. Jamanis, scoring
Grace Caldwell.
After the Spartans regained a one-run lead in the top of the sixth, Sooy appeared to put the game away for the Knights when she launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth scoring Costigan and Diianni, who both singled, giving Arcadia an 8-6 lead going into the top of the seventh.
After retiring the first two batters of the inning, York singled twice and laced a three-run homer over the right field fence. The Knights loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to tie the score.
Brenna Dolan moved to 5-2 on the season with the defeat, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 13 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Sooy was the offensive star of game one, finishing 3-for-4 with two home runs, driving in five runs while scoring three. Costigan, Diianni, and Klose all had two hits in the first game.
Arcadia returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Haverford College for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
