No. 5/8 Baseball Sets New Wins Record with Senior Day Sweep of DeSales
 
GLENSIDE – The No. 5/8 Arcadia University baseball team set a new program-record for wins with its 34th of the season as it wrapped up the 2022 season with a senior day sweep of DeSales University on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 6-1 before securing game two 8-4.
 
The Knights conclude the regular season 19-2 on league play and 34-6 overall.
 
Arcadia opened the scoring in game one when Griffin Murphy singled home Zachary Sekelick after Sekelick was hit by a pitch with two outs and stole second.
 
The Bulldogs tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth.
 
The Knights put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with five runs on four hits. Emilio Pallante led off with a single to right and stole second before coming in to score on Hunter Curley's double to right. After Curley moved to third on Justin Massielo's fly out to deep right, Curley came I to score on a passed ball. Matthew Sot the walked and stole second before Connor Cheeseman walked and was replaced on the bases with Joseph Kumar followed by a single from Ryan Smolen to load the bases for Sekelick, who reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Sot. After Sekelick stole second to put runners on second and third, Nick Opalkowski singled to left bringing home Kumar and Sekelick to finish the scoring.
 
Curley earned the win on the mound in game one, scattering six hits in a complete-game effort with one run allowed, walking four and striking out six.
 
Opalkowski finished 1-for-1 with two rbi's while Alex Madera, Pallante, Curley, Cheeseman, and Smolen each added a hit.
 
The Knights exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third in game two on six hits and the help of three errors. Sekelick led off with a single left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Opalkowski. Madera reached on a bunt single that moved Sekelick to third and promptly stole second. Pallante followed with a two run single to center and moved to third when Curley hit an infield single that was thrown away by the third baseman allowing Curley to move to second. Massielo followed with a double to left-center scoring both runners and Matt Donchez hit a single to left allowing Massielo to go to third. Cheeseman reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that scored Massielo and Donchez and after Smolen walked a throwing error by the catcher allowed Cheeseman to score.
 
Madera added an eighth run in the bottom of the fourth when he led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
 
DeSales pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth but Arcadia was able to slam the door.
 
Zach Steiger improved to 5-0 with the win, allowing just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
 
Madera finished game two 3-for-3 with two runs scored while also setting a new single-season and career record for stolen bases with 32 and 64, respectively.
 
The Knights, the No. 1 seed in the in the upcoming MAC Freedom Championship, return to action on Friday when they again host DeSales, the No. 4 seed, for game one of a best-of-three series with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m at Skip Wilson Field.
