Baseball Falls in Shootout with Denison, Topped by Wooster in Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – In a game that spanned two days, the Arcadia University baseball team fell to No. 11 Denison, 25-23 in 10 innings on Tuesday morning. The Knights then fell to The College of Wooster, 5-1, in their normally scheduled matchup.
 
In the game against Denison, Alex Madera and Anthony Bruno both had four hits. Bruno, the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Player of the Week had two home runs, which ties a program record and six RBI's, which is the second most in program history. Madera finished 4-for-5 with four RBI's and two walks. Ryan Smolen finished the game with three hits and four RBI's, which came on an inside the park home run. In total, Arcadia totaled 21 hits in the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Denison scored four runs in the top of the first before the Knights tied the score at four in the bottom half of the inning through a Justin Massielo RBI single and a Bruno three-run home run.
  • The Big Red took a 7-4 lead in the second inning, but Arcadia exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning. Madera got the scoring started with an RBI single. Massielo picked up an RBI single for the second straight inning and then Bruno tied the game at seven with an RBI single. Emilio Pallante cleared the bases with a three-run double. Madera then had a three-run double of his own to give the Knights a 13-7 lead through two innings of play.
  • Jason Pace entered the game on the mound in the third inning and set the Big Red down in order. In the home half of the inning, Bruno hit his second homer of the game, this one a two-run home run. Noah Stennett sacrifice bunted a run home to give Arcadia a 16-7 advantage.
  • Over the next three innings, Denison fought back to take an 18-16 lead.
  • Michael Bukowski hit his first Arcadia home run, a three-run homer in the bottom half of the sixth inning, giving the Knights the lead back at 19-18.
  • Denison hit a three-run home run of its own in the seventh inning, taking a 21-19 lead, but Smolen's inside the park grand slam gave the Knights a 23-21 lead.
  • Denison scored two runs in the top of the eighth before the game was suspended for rain on Monday afternoon.
  • The game resumed on Tuesday morning with Denison having the bases loaded and two outs. Nick Fossile entered the game and tossed a three-pitch strikeout to strand the bases loaded.
  • Denison scored two runs in the 10th inning and that proved to be the difference as the Big Red stranded the bases loaded in the Arcadia half of the 10th to win the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wooster scored twice in the second and three times in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
  • Bruno hit an RBI double in the ninth that scored Madera, but the Knights fell to Wooster, 5-1.
  • Trevor Laraia got the start for the Knights and threw three innings of two run (one earned) ball. He struck out seven of the nine outs that he got. Vinny Versaci, Drew Pecorilli and Cam Nebel all threw scoreless innings in the defeat.

The Knights close out their spring break trip in Florida with a matchup with North Central on Thursday, March 16. Game time is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
