Women's Volleyball Splits in Final Matches at Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Arcadia University women's volleyball split its final matches at Gallaudet's Worthington Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell to Utica in a marathon, five-set match, then closed out action with a three-set victory over Pratt.
 
In the match against Utica, the Pioneers took the first two sets, but Arcadia took the next two to force a fifth set, which the Knights had a lead in, but fell just short.
 
Danielle Doyle and Nicole Dallara each had 11 kills in the match. Estefania Martinez-Sola added 10 kills. She also had 23 assists and 22 digs for her second triple-double of the season. Dallara had a double-double with her 11 kills and a career-high 29 digs.
 
In the sweep of Pratt, first-year Alyssa Dennison led the Arcadia attack with 10 kills. Kailyn Riggi had a career-high 26 digs in the Knights' victory.

For her efforts, Doyle was named to the Worthington Classic All-Tournament Team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1: Utica 26, Arcadia 24:
The Knights took the first five points of the set, which was answered by a 4-0 run by Utica to cut its deficit to one. The Knights immediately went on another run, giving them an 11-4 lead. Arcadia maintained its lead to 17-10, but Utica got back into the frame with a 5-0 run, cutting the Knights' lead to 17-15. With Arcadia leading 20-17, the Pioneers won six consecutive points, giving them a 23-20 lead. The Knights battled back to tie the frame at 24, but Utica took the final two points of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
Set 2: Utica 25, Arcadia 21:
The Knights had a strong start to the set, building a 17-9 lead. Arcadia continued to lead at 19-14, but the Pioneers took the next nine points, taking a 23-19 lead. The teams traded the final four points of the set as Utica took a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Set 3: Arcadia 25, Utica 20:
Utica held an early 7-3 lead, but the Knights answered, taking the next five points, giving them an 8-7 lead. With the set tied at 12, the Pioneers took the next two points, but Arcadia closed out the rest of the set on a 13-6 run to stay alive in the match.
 
Set 4: Arcadia 27, Utica 25:
The Pioneers got out to a 12-8 lead due to a 9-1 run. Arcadia erased a 16-13 deficit through a 5-0 run to take an 18-16 lead. Utica answered with a 4-0 run, as it retook the lead at 20-18, but that was answered by an Arcadia 4-0 run. The teams played to a 24-24 tie. Utica took the next point to get to match point, but the Knights won the next three points to force a fifth set.
 
Set 5: Utica 17, Arcadia 15
The Knights held a 9-3 lead in the final set. Utica answered with a 7-1 run to tie the frame at 10. The teams then traded 2-0 runs and the traded points, which led to a 15-14 Arcadia lead. Utica closed on a 3-0 run to win the set and the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Set 1: Arcadia 25, Pratt 16:
The Knights had a strong start to the set as they got out to a 16-7 lead. The teams then traded multi-point runs, but Arcadia closed on a 4-0 run to take the opening set in the match.
 
Set 2: Arcadia 25, Pratt 18:
Arcadia took the first eight points of the set, but Pratt went on to take a 16-13 lead through a 16-5 run. The Knights then closed out the frame on a 12-2 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
Set 3: Arcadia 25, Pratt 22:
Pratt led 9-5 early in the set, but Arcadia went on a 9-3 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Knights held a slim, 20-19 advantage, but outscored Pratt, 5-3 in the closing stages of the frame to win the set and the match.
