Women's Lacrosse Hold Off Alvernia to Stay Unbeaten

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's lacrosse team returned home Wednesday afternoon and earned a 7-5 nonconference victory over Alvernia University. With the win, the Knights improve to 4-0 overall (0-0 MAC Freedom).

Arcadia was led offensively by Avery Ditze, who recorded a hat trick. Mackenzie Clark, Jaylee Killgore, Meghan Graham, and Ella Longacre each added a goal in the balanced effort.

The Knights controlled much of the statistical battle, outshooting Alvernia 31-13 and holding a 13-10 edge in shots on goal. Arcadia committed fewer turnovers (19-25) and was efficient in transition, successfully clearing 20 of 22 attempts while limiting Alvernia to 16-for-25 on clears. Each team secured seven draw controls, with Alejandra Roemer leading Arcadia with two. Roemer also posted a team-high three caused turnovers, while Taylor Funcheon collected four ground balls.

Funcheon earned the start in goal and made six saves while allowing five goals, securing her fourth win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Arcadia created an early scoring opportunity, but Ella Longacre's shot hit the post. Shortly after, the Knights were issued a yellow card but successfully killed the penalty.

  • Jaylee Killgore nearly opened the scoring later in the first quarter, but her shot was saved. Killgore struck the post on a second attempt, and Ditze followed with a shot that sailed wide as the game remained scoreless.

  • Meghan Graham broke through with just over five minutes remaining in the opening quarter, finishing an assist from Longacre for her fourth goal of the season.

  • Alvernia responded with just over two minutes left in the first to even the score at 1-1 heading into the second quarter.

  • The visitors scored on back-to-back possessions early in the second to take a 3-1 lead.

  • Midway through the quarter, Alvernia was assessed a two-minute, non-releasable penalty. Arcadia capitalized with consecutive goals. Longacre converted a free-position attempt for a man-up goal, and Ditze followed with her ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3.

  • Mackenzie Clark gave the Knights the lead early in the second half with her fifth goal of the season.

  • Clark appeared to score again in the third quarter, but the goal was waved off and Arcadia was issued a penalty. The Knights' defense held firm and killed the penalty.

  • Ditze extended the lead with her 10th goal of the season after Arcadia forced a turnover and transitioned quickly the other way.

  • Killgore added a free-position goal with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter to give Arcadia a 6-3 advantage heading into the fourth.

  • Ditze completed her hat trick early in the final quarter with another free-position goal to make it 7-3.

  • Alvernia scored twice late, but the Knights' defense held strong to secure the 7-5 victory.
