GLENSIDE, PA: (Oct. 6, 2010) - Sophomore
Mike Cahill (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) scored unassisted in the 110th minute of today's non-conference men's soccer game against Wilkes University to give Arcadia University a 3-2 come from behind win in double overtime. Today's victory is the third straight for Arcadia who improves to 6-5 overall (1-0 CC) while the Wilkes Colonels fall to 4-8 overall (1-0 FC). Cahill put his season's first goal under the cross bar from 15 yards out as the Knights, who were down 1-0 early, scored twice to take a 2-1 lead before Wilkes tied the game in the 80th minute to force extra minutes.
Wilkes converted a nice play to open the game's scoring as Ed Zulkowski and Tyler Young connected on a passing play to Michael Turner whose shot from the left side trickled past Arcadia keeper
Ryan Lantzy '14 (Pheonixville, PA/Pheonixville) into the far right corner at 14:26. In the 26th minute Arcadia would even the score when first year
Nick Morris (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) centered a pass to first year
David Jacobs (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) who headed home his first collegiate goal past Wilkes keeper Kaleb Smith. The two teams would enter halftime knotted at 1 goal apiece.
Jacobs picked up in the second stanza, where he left off in the first, this time distributing the ball to sophomore
Zach Todd (Cape May Courthouse, NJ/Middle Twp.) whose shot from the right side hit the left post and crossed the goal line at 50:29 giving the Knights the go-ahead tally and a 2-1 lead. First year
Joe Bagnall (York, PA/Dallastown) nearly made it 3-1 Arcadia lead when he tore down the right side uncontested but his shot grazed off the fingertips of Smith and wide. The Knights controlled the offense, finishing the game with a 27-10 advantage in shots but Wilkes remainied persistent. Joe Brennan nearly tied the game for the Colonels in the 61st minute when his shot from the left side was headed for the upper short corner but Lantzy was there to punch it away. Wilkes would finalize capitalize with ten minutes remaining in regualtion as Zulkowski ripped a shot from 15 yards out that snuck under the cross bar at 80:47. After the first overtime came and went, the Knights regained control of the game shortly before Cahill scored the the game winner at 110:34.
In addition to their commanding lead in shots, the Knights led in corner opportunties 7-6. Lantzy made 4 saves to improve to 5-4 overall. Smith, who played a solid game in the pipes for the Colonels, made 12 saves in the loss.
Arcadia returns to action this Saturday at home, hosting Messiah College at 3 PM for Fall Fest Weekend.
