Late penalty kick puts Knights on top 3-2 over Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa.:  Tied at 2-2 with 5 minutes to play, Wilkes University was called for a foul in the box leading to a penalty kick for Arcadia, taken by junior Zach Todd (Cape May Courthouse, NJ/Middle Twp.) and put left corner past Colonel keeper Kyle Romm giving the Knights a 3-2 lead they did not relinquish in tonight's non-conference men's soccer game.  Arcadia battled back from two one-goal deficits this evening and improves to 6-5 overall on the season.

Wilkes opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, a goal by TJ Brandt from the top right of the box
but the Knights quickly ended the Colonels celebration 1:13 later as sophomore Mike Cahill (Bensalem PA/Bensalem) slotted his shot from the right of the box inside the left post to tie the game at 1. Wilkes regained the lead at 29:51 as Ed Zulkowski played a through ball up the middle to Michael Turner, scoring on the inside post past Arcadia's sophomore keeper Ryan Lantzy (Pheonixville, PA/Pheonxville).  Yet once again, Arcadia got right back on the scoreboard as Todd headed a pass across the box to sophomore Joe Bagnall (York, PA/Dallastown) who scored inside the right post for the Knights second game-tying tally of the opening half.

While the game remained scoreless for the next 53 minutes, the two teams upped to tempo physically.  When Wilkes was awarded a red card in the 67th minute, the Colonels were forced to play a man-down for the remainder of the game, eventually leading to the game winning penalty kick at 85:11 by Todd.

Arcadia held a 24-10 shot advantage, while garnering 12 corner kicks to Wilkes' five attempts. Wilkes' starting  keeper Dave Marr finished with seven saves before leaving the game due to injury. Romm made three stops in 23:00 in net. Lantzy recorded three saves for Arcadia to post the victory in net.

The Knights return to their Commonwealth Conference schedule this Saturday, traveling to Messiah College for a 7 p.m. game at Shoemaker Field.
