GLENSIDE, Pa., Tuesday, March 22, 2011-- Arcadia University Softball made quick work of visiting Wesley College Tuesday afternoon, shelling the Wolverines in game one by a margin of 20-0 after five innings and followed that with a 10-2 victory, also in five innings in the nightcap. The Knights improve 9-3 overall as they head into the start of Commonwealth Conference play, traveling to defending league champion Messiah College this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Grantham, Pa.
The Knights used four pitchers who combined for a .111 ERA on the afternoon, dishing out 13 strikeouts while allowing just four hits and no earned runs. The game one win went to first year
Jess Wood who allowed just one Wesley hit through 11 batters faced through three innings of work. It was Wood's second appearance all season and her first collegiate win in the circle. Senior
Kellie Reese picked up her fourth win of the year in game two, allowing just two hits through four innings of work while fanning 8 Wesley batters. First-year
Heather Buriak aided the Knights cause by throwing one inning of relief for Reese, allowing just one hit for the game two save. Junior
Kelsey Roberts faced six batters and struck out three while allowing no hits in two innings. Offensively, Arcadia out-hit Wesley 27-4 with nine extra-base hits and only three errors on the day to Wesley's six. On the bases, the Knights went 10-11 on stolen bags.
At the plate the Knights showcased their skills with four batters enjoying a perfect day, fueled by the days' lead-off batter, junior
Lindsey Henchinski, who banged a triple straight out of the gate, igniting the Knights seven-run first inning in game one. Henchinski, who recorded her 100th career hit the last time the Knights took to Blankley Field against Penn State Abington on March fifth, rounded home to start the Knight's onslaught on a fielder's choice error putting Arcadia up 1-0. Virginia Buechel followed to make it 2-0, followed by a two-run single from Wood, and a two-run single from senior
Ashley McCarthy to retire Wesley pitcher Taylor Hendricks with only out away in the first. The Knights tacked on another score to finish the first up 7-0 after batting around the order. In the second inning, Arcadia sent 6 more scores across home plate off of four hits for a commanding 13-0 lead, scoring three more times in the third and four more times in the fourth to win 20-0 after five innings. Katie Resh went 3-3 in the opening game, including a two-run single in the third inning while junior
Erin Ficca went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a two-run double in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Marissa Perez batted 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI while McCarthy finished the opening game 2-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI.
The Wolverines opened up game two by plating two runs on just one hit and two Arcadia errors in the field to open the inning. But the Knights didn't allow Wesley's 2-0 lead to stand for long, picking up a run in both the first and second frames to tie the game at 2 and then erupting for 8 runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 10-2 Knights lead. Wood, who reached on an error by Wesley to lead off the inning, scored to break the 2-2 tie. Junior
Amy Johnson drilled an RBI single to centerfield for a 4-2 Knights lead. First-year
Ashley John scored on an error by the Wesley shortstop to make it 5-2 and Henchinski quickly made it 6-2 off an RBI single to leftfield. McCarthy would later score, unearned, and a bases-loaded single from Perez made it 8-2. The Knights topped off the inning with a huge three run double to leftfield from sophomore
Corrin Showalter to make it 10-2 which stood as the final.
Perez batted 5-for-5 with five runs scored, two RBI and a pair of doubles. Resh finished 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Johnson went 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI and Buriak went 1-1 at the dish. Showalter finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI,
Ashley John 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI while Henchinski helped out the cause going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a triple and two RBI.
