Samson Lone Winner as Knights Drop League Opener at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa., Saturday, March 26, 2011-- Graduate student Irina Samson, playing No. 4 Singles defeated Lycoming College's Kathy Jacobs 6-1, 6-3 Saturday afternoon registering the lone point for the Arcadia Women's Tennis in their Commonwealth Conference opener at Lycoming in very uncomfortable temperatures in North-central Pennsylvania. Arcadia was defeated by an 8-1 margin. The match was played as a double-header with the men's teams from both schools, with Lycoming's men taking a 9-0 win over the Knights.

The Warriors opened the afternoon with a sweep of doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead. Samson, who paired with junior Jasmine Peake at No. 2 doubles, earned the most doubles points of any Arcadia pairing, falling 4-8 to Sayumi Akashi and Linda Fogg of Lycoming. Junior Megan Gillespie, playing No. 1 singles for the Knights was forced into a third-set tie-breaker against Megan Gardner of Lycoming, after taking the opening set 6-3, and eventually falling in sets two and three, 4-6, 2-6. Playing her first collegiate match at No. 5 singles was first-year Melissa D'Arcangelo who battled against Lycoming's Ellen Phillips but lost in straight sets, 4-6, 3-6.

The Knights host Messiah College on April 2. The match will be played as part of a double-header with the men's team, with men's and women's doubles beginning at 11 a.m.
