GLENSIDE, Pa., Wednesday, March 30, 2011-- Entering the fifth week of play as the No. 20 ranked team in Division III, visiting Elizabethtown College pulled away from Arcadia Women's Lacrosse early in the first half enroute to a 19-3 win over the Knights in Middle Atlantic action Wednesday afternoon in Glenside. With today's loss, the Knights drop to 2-4 overall and 1-4 within the Middle Atlantic rankings while the Blue Jays improve to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Down 0-2 after three minutes of play, Arcadia tied it up with goals by first-year Sara Volk-Perez and senior Jen Ng but the Blue Jays went on to score seven unanswered to close the first half up 9-2. Sophomore Deanna Thompson responded to the challenge of protecting the Arcadia net through regulation, making 19 saves on the day, including stonewalling the Blue Jays point-blank on numerous shot attempts. Junior Stephanie Holguin rounded out the Knights offense with a goal late in the second half with Ng getting the assist.
Senior
Kelly Donahue played a solid game on the defensive end, protecting her keeper by eliminating the Blue Jays attack from behind the goal. Arcadia's defensive unit spoiled many Blue Jay scoring attempts as they drove them out of prime scoring position but the Blue Jays passing offense provided the spark to control game. The Blue Jays played a tight collapsing defense that limited Arcadia to just 12 shots while E' town's roster depth provided fresh legs on the field at all times. The Blue Jays were led by Becky Porter's five goals, with four scores from Bari Rothenstien and three from Emily Butler. Eight different Blue Jays scored goals on the afternoon.
The Blue Jays limited any damage caused by Arcadia's top two scorer's but they were able to contribute in other ways. Sophomore
Meghan Fallon led the team with three caused turnovers and five ground balls while junior
Stephanie Holguin captured two of the Knights five draw-controls and scored one goal and an assist.
Shots were in favor of the victors 47-12. E' town also led in draw-controls 19-5. Ground balls were even at 17 while the Knights committed four more turnovers (15-11).
Arcadia will look to bounce back from today's loss, hosting York College Thursday at 4 p.m.
