Knight’s Split Series with E’town, Pocket First Commonwealth Win

GLENSIDE, Pa., Friday, April 2, 2011-- In the first game of Saturday's Commonwealth Conference double header between the visiting Elizabethtown Blue Jays and your Arcadia Knights, the crowd witnessed the definition of a pitchers' duel between Arcadia's Kelsey Roberts and E'town's Julie Sebastian with Roberts coming out the winner due to a Marrisa Perez '13 clutch three-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, a 3-0 win for the Knights. In game two however, E'town salvaged the series split after turning a two-run deficit into a two run lead in the top of the sixth to hang on to win 5-3.

In the first five innings of the opener, the Knights could not seem to muster up any base runners as Blue Jays pitcher, Sebastian, kept mowing down one AU hitter after another. While Arcadia had trouble getting runners on base, Elizabethtown had trouble capitalizing with base runners in scoring position. It seemed like whenever the Knights were in trouble, pitcher Kelsey Roberts '12 would find a way out of it. As a result, the packed stands at Blankley Field saw a quick five scoreless innings to start the game.

The top of the sixth was no different as Roberts put down the Blue Jays' hitters once again without any damage being done. As Arcadia came into bat for the bottom of the sixth inning, a switch was flicked as the bats came alive. The inning started with a lead-off walk from the nine-hole hitter, senior Ashley McCarthy.  After one out was recorded by the Jay's Defense; Erin Wojcieszyn '12 singled up the middle. After a Brandee Zablotsky '13 walk and a Virginia Buechel '11 pop out, the stage was set for sophomore Marissa Perez: two outs, bases loaded, and the game on the line. And Perez answered the call with a deep drive that landed right between the outstretched glove of E'town's diving Right Fielder, Heather Peluso and the right field line. The ball rolled to the fence, resulting in a bases clearing triple for Perez. Roberts wasted no time in the top of the seventh inning, putting the Blue Jays down in order 1-2-3 to end the game, 3-0, and get the Knights their first Commonwealth victory of the season. Roberts dealt two strikeouts, three walks and yielded just one hit to E'town from start to finish.

A more evenly played game two featured nine hits apiece for the two teams. McCarthy drove in the Knights first run in the bottom of the second and sophomore Corrin Showalter scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0 Knights after two. The next team to light the scoreboard was E'town with a home run in the top of the fourth to narrow Arcadia's lead to 2-1 but the Knights quickly responded when Zablotsky drove in McCarthy for the Knight's third run on a single to center in the bottom of the fifth. With a 3-1 lead, Arcadia fell victim to a huge sixth inning for the visitors as the Blue Jays took the Knights for four runs on five hits that featured four singles and a two-run double putting E' town on top 5-3. That would stand as the final score as Arcadia failed to bring home two base runners in the bottom of the seventh. First-year Jess Wood was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts through seven innings. McCarthy finished 3-for-3 in the nightcap to pace Arcadia.
