Knights Light the Lamp for a Season-High 21 goals in Victory Over Lebanon Valley

Glenside, Pa., Friday, April 2, 2011--  Visiting Lebanon Valley College came within one goal of the difference maker on seven occasions but could not jump ahead of Arcadia University who scored a season-high 21 goals in their second Middle Atlantic Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon in Glenside. The second meeting of these two teams was certainly quite different than their first just a season ago with the Dutchmen coming out on top at home in the low-scoring 9-8 victory. Today's season high goal mark is also the first time the Knights have sent 21 goals into the back of a Middle Atlantic opponents net since joining the league in the 2008 season. It also ends a three game week on a high note.

The Knights jumped out to a 5-1 advantage after the first ten minutes but the Dutchmen clawed their way back in and by the half it was only an 11-9 lead for the Knights. Arcadia finally put some distance between themselves and their guests late in the second half while holding LVC scoreless for the final 13 minutes of play.

Junior Stephanie Holguin rang home eight goals to lead all scorers while sophomore Meghan Fallon netted six along with two assists. It is the third game for Holguin with seven or more goals and third for Fallon with six or more. The two have accounted for 64 points of the Knights 103 points this season. And when the team's top two scorer's draw double and triple team coverage from their opponents, Arcadia gets scoring in other ways. Kreena Patel '11 (21 points), who missed the last game due to an injury netted a hat trick and dished out two assists, Sara Volk-Perez '14 (10 points) scored twice and Kristen Chasse '11 and Jen Ng '11 each added a tally. Sophomore keeper Deanna Thompson made 11 stops for her second win of the season.

Hannah Kretchel and Lindsey Buckman carried the Dutchmen (3-4, 2-2 MAC) team with five goals apiece while both Corrine Palombo and Erica Ameigh shared goalkeeping duties. Palombo made 10 saves and Ameigh, nine, both keepers responsible for some timely saves to keep it from being a run-away.

A few highlights from the Knight's season best offensive-production began with Volk-Perez's lightning quick drive off the draw for her first of the game with 17:43 to play in the first half. Minutes later, Holguin saw an opening along the left sideline and wheeled right past her defender from midfield into score to make it 8-5 Knights. Opening the second half scoring for the Knights was Fallon, who, from behind the net, spun two LVC defenders in their tracks and came out in front to score. That goal made it 12-10 after LVC scored just 36 seconds into the half. When LVC again cut into the Knights lead, 13-12, perhaps the play of the afternoon came from Volk-Perez who switched her stick from her right to her left back to her right hand, all while dodging LVC defenders and hitting the twine to put the Knights back on top by two. The Knights would finally regain their four-goal lead, last held early in the opening half, when Holguin went coast to coast off the draw with 14 minutes remaining. With an 18-14 lead, the Knights would go onto out-score LVC 3-1 for the six goal victory.

Kelsey Unger '11 and Kaitlyn Gamber '11 made 3 caused turnovers apiece. Gamber and Volk-Perez led the team with four draw controls apiece. Arcadia led in both shots 46-27 and ground balls 27-24.

Arcadia (3-5, 2-4 MAC) will look to make it two in a row, hosting non-conference opponent Rosemont College Monday at 4 p.m.
