Box Score 2 GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Gwynedd-Mercy University Sunday at Blankley Field, winning game-one 8-0 in six innings and recording a walk-off 2-1 win in game-two.
Arcadia honored its seniors –
Leanda Helms (Topton, Pa.),
Ashley John (Columbus, N.J.), team manager Devon King,
Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) and
Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) – in a Senior Day ceremony prior to game-one, and then honored head softball coach Linda Detra for her 43 years of service to the University between games.
Detra announced earlier this year that she will retire at the conclusion of her 21st season leading the Knights' softball team.
Arcadia got the only run it would need on the bottom of the first in game-one when sophomore Nicole Larro (Cedarville, N.J.) scored on Wood's single through the left side of the infield. The Knights added another run in the second as sophomore
Alicia McMahon (Bel Air, Md.) scored on Tomaschek's sac-fly.
Three more runs came across the following inning to grow the lead to 5-0 as the Knights loaded the bases and scored on a hit batter, walk and a sac-fly. Wood drove in a pair of runs with a double to the gap in right center and the McMahon drove in Larro in the bottom of the sixth to give Arcadia the mercy-rule eight-run walk-off win.
Sophomore
Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) tossed a two-hit shutout while striking out nine batters to improve her record to 8-6 for the season for the Knights. Fellow Sophomore Ashley Lamont (Hillsborough, N.J.) fell to 6-9 with the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits in 5.1 innings.
Larro was 4-for-4 with a double and four runs scored, while Wood was 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and one run scored. McMahon finish the first game 2-for-3 with one run scored and two driven in.
Game-two was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when John scored on a throwing error by Lamont to give Arcadia a 1-0 lead, and sophomore MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa.) scored on a two-out error in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 1-1.
The Knights then rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Larro reached on an infield single and then scored on an error two batters later when sophomore Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa.) threw the ball into center field on an attempt to make the final out of the inning at second.
Sophomore
Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) went the distance for Arcadia in game-two, scattering eight hits and allowing one run in seven innings to improve her record to 6-7. Junior Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa.) fell to 0-3 with the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in 6.2 innings.
The Knights have now won seven in a row and 10 of their last 12 to even their record at 15-15 for the season. The Griffins fell to 6-17 as their losing streak reached six in a row.
Arcadia will return to action Tuesday when it hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware Valley College at 3:30 p.m. at Blankley Field.
