Box Score 2 GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team was two outs away from taking game-two from nationally-ranked conference-rival No. 14 Lebanon Valley College, but the Dutchmen tied the game in the top of the seventh and went on to seal the victory in the tenth inning to secure the doubleheader sweep, 11-0 in game-one and 3-2 in game-two.
Arcadia fell to 15-17 overall and 7-7 in the Commonwealth Conference with the losses while Lebanon Valley improved to 24-3 overall and 13-1 in conference play with the wins.
Game-one was a struggle for the Knights offensively as Sam Derr (Lititz, Pa.) continued a dominant senior year for the Dutchmen in the pitching circle in the complete game six-hit shutout. Arcadia spread out the six hits over the five innings and had runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but could not produce a clutch hit to get on the board.
Lebanon Valley scored their 11 runs in the first, second, and fourth innings with a six-run fourth inning putting the game out of reach for Arcadia. The Dutchmen put the first two runs on the scoreboard in the first inning after a two-run single off the bat of freshman Jordyn Miller (York, Pa.). Then a sacrifice fly from sophomore Emily Johnson (Landisville, Pa.) pushed across the third run of the inning to give Lebanon Valley an early 3-0 advantage.
The Dutchmen put two more up in the second after a two-out RBI-double and RBI-single from junior Tessa Deardorff (Spring Mills, Pa.) and freshman Sammy Bost (Eldersburg, Md.).
In the fourth, Lebanon Valley exploded for six runs from six hits and reached on an error to put the game out of reach and give the team a 11-0 lead. The Knights could not string anything together in the fifth inning to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule.
Sophomore
Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) suffered the loss in the pitching circle for the Knights, falling to 6-8 on the year, after surrendering 11 runs on 13 hits and a walk. Derr picked up the win for the Dutchmen, after scattering six hits and no walks in five innings of work in game-one.
Game-two proved to be a completely different story than the first end of the doubleheader. Sophomore
Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) was dominant on the mound and was able to hold down the Dutchmen offense for the better part of the game, starting the game off with seven consecutive strikeouts and striking out eight of the first nine batters of the game.
Arcadia finally broke through in the third inning and scored its first run of the day after an errant throw from Lebanon Valley's first baseman on an attempt to get sophomore Nicole Larro (Cedarville, N.J.) advancing to third. The throw got past third base and Larro ended up crossing home on the error.
The game was a pitchers' duel as Derr entered to pitch to pit the teams' two aces against each other for the rest of the game and Derr was able to hold the Knights at bay for the remainder of the game.
The only blemish in what seemed to be Wilson's ninth win of the year came in the seventh inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error and advanced to second because of the throw sailing into right field. A single from junior Jorey Aumiller (Dauphin, Pa.) pushed across Lebanon Valley's first run of the game to tie the ballgame and the Knights went down in order in the bottom half to send the game to extras.
Both teams could not get anyone across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, which sent the game to the tenth, where at the start of the inning for each team, a runner is placed at second base.
The Dutchmen were able to get runners on second and third with one out after senior Mary Readinger (Williamstown, Pa.) was placed on second and advanced to third on a groundball from Bost, who reached on an error and then stole second. Derr helped out her own cause by next lining a double down the leftfield line to score both Readinger and Bost and give them a two-run advantage.
Arcadia did not go down without a fight in the bottom half as sophomore
Sara Boyadjis (Cedar Knolls, N.J.) led off the inning with a single to make it first and third after senior
Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) was placed at second at the start of the inning. Boyadjis stole second and because of the play, Tomaschek sprinted home to cut the deficit in half and make it a 3-2 ballgame with the tying run on second with no outs.
Larro grounded out in the next at-bat, but advanced Boyadjis to third to make the tying run only 60 feet away from scoring. A groundout and a pop up, however, ended the game for the Knights.
Wilson (8-7) suffered the tough-luck loss after going all 10 innings, but giving up three runs (none earned) on eight hits and a walk, while recording 11 strikeouts. Derr (15-0) picked up her second win of the day for the Dutchmen after throwing the last six innings in relief and just surrendering the one unearned run on four hits.
For Arcadia, Larro finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with a run scored. In game-two, Boyadjis, Larro, sophomore
Alicia McMahon (Bel Air, Md.), and sophomore
Natalie O'Reilly (Honesdale, Pa.) each contributed two hits in the contest.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday when they host Eastern University for their final home games scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.
