Softball Walks Off in Game-Two on Gunia’s Sac Fly, Splits with Cabrini

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLENSIDE, Pa. – Sophomore Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) lifted a sac-fly to center field that allowed senior Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) to score from third and give Arcadia 4-3 walk-off win in game two of a non-conference doubleheader against Cabrini College Tuesday at Blankley Field. The Cavaliers (10-11) took a 10-8 victory over the Knights (9-15) in game-one.

Game-two was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when senior Leanda Helms (Topton, Pa.) drove a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to give Arcadia a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last long though as Cabrini scored twice in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Amber Dietrich (Hamilton, N.J.) tied the game with an RBI-single to right and classmate Katelyn Melahn (Gilbertsville, Pa.) gave the Cavaliers the lead when she scored on freshman Lindsay Savar's (Cherry Hill, N.J.) sac-fly.

The Knights regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when senior Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) sent a bases-loaded single to right, scoring sophomore Alicia McMahon (Bel Air, Md.) and Gunia, giving Arcadia a 3-2 advantage.

Dietrich tied the game at three in the top of the seventh with a triple to center that scored freshman Brianna Mililo (Erial, N.J.) from first. The Knights caught a break in that Dietrich's slide carried her past the third base bag and she was tagged out to end the Cavaliers' scoring threat.

Arcadia then loaded the bases with one away in the bottom half of the frame to set the stage for Gunia's game-winning sacrifice fly to center. The throw home wasn't close and Wood scored standing up to win the game.

Freshman Katherine Ghyzel (Rochester, N.Y.) earned the first win of her collegiate career after allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Her record is 1-0 following the complete-game victory.

Cabrini got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in game-one on a two-RBI double off the bat of junior Becca Miles (Bel Air, Md.) before the Knights exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-2 lead. The Cavaliers answered with a seven-run third to regain the lead for good and added another run in the fifth to take a 10-7 lead.

Arcadia tried to rally in the final two innings, but managed just one run on McMahon's run scoring single to right that scored Wood. The Knights stranded a pair of runners in both the sixth and seventh innings as Cabrini held on for the win.

Arcadia will next travel to Swarthmore College Thursday for a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
