No. 5 Softball Drops Elimination Game to No. 4 Alvernia, 2-1

Box Score READING, Pa. – The fifth-seeded Arcadia University softball team dropped a 2014 Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament elimination game to host fourth-seeded Alvernia University Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-1.

Both offenses were held scoreless through the first four innings, but the Knights were able to strike first in the top half of the fifth inning after senior Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) struck an RBI-single through the left side to score junior Jessica Shotwell (Winsted, CT) from third.

The Crusaders (20-13) did not waste any time responding as they knotted the game at one in the very next half inning. Senior Samantha Penk (Lincroft, N.J.) hit a one-out triple to right field and then classmate Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, N.J.) bunted a single to send Penk across home.

Both teams traded zeroes in the sixth and Alvernia would win the game in the bottom of the seventh with one out on a throwing error. A leadoff single put sophomore Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa.) on first and then a one-out double allowed her to get to third but because of the error, Fritz was able to score from third and take the victory for the Crusaders.

Sophomore pitcher Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) cruised through the first four innings of the game, only allowing two hits to Alvernia, but would take the tough-luck loss in the circle for the Knights. In 6.1 innings of work, Wilson gave up just the two runs (one earned) while scattering six hits and a walk and recorded four strikeouts.

Sophomore Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) led Arcadia at the plate, going 2-for-3, and Wood pitched in with a base hit and the team's lone RBI.

For Alvernia, junior Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa.) picked up the victory after tossing the last three innings in relief, and surrendering just one run on two hits.

With the loss, Arcadia is eliminated from the Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament, but is eligible for ECAC postseason and will wait to see if the Knights have earned a berth into the tournament, which the tournament field will be announced at the beginning of this upcoming week.
