GLENSIDE, Pa. -- Arcadia's women's volleyball team extended its program-record win streak to eight straight and improved to 10-1 on the season with a 3-0 over Messiah on Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
Â
The Knights remained perfect in MAC Commonwealth play (3-0) by knocking off the Falcons (7-5, 2-1) for the second year in row. Arcadia took the first set, 25-21, before an epic 28-26 win in set two. The Knights closed out the win by cruising to a 25-15 win in the third set.
Â
In the first set, the Knights held an 18-13 lead before the Falcons pulled to within 18-17 with four straight points. Still leading by one (20-19), the Scarlet & Grey got some breathing room with a 4-1 run to make it 24-20 following an MC attack error. Another attack error by the Falcons at 24-21 gave AU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
In the second set, the Falcons raced out to 7-3 lead that prompted an AU timeout. The Falcons' lead reached as many as eight points on several occasions, the last coming at 19-11. The Knights began chipping away at their deficit, pulling to within 22-17 and prompting a timeout from the Falcons.
Â
Messiah seemed to have the match in hand, taking a 24-18 lead when AU's
Lizzie Joseph misfired on an attack. However, a Messiah service error at set point gave new life to AU, and
Allison Elechko converted five straight service attempts to pull AU even at 24-24 on a kill from
Lauren Enfield. Messiah regained the lead at 26-25 and had a chance to win, but another service error tied the match at 26-26 and
Kayla Resh served the final two points for AU, the Knights closing out the win on a
Shannon Ryan kill.
Â
The third set featured little drama as the Knights took an early 10-4 lead and were never truly threatened.
Â
Four different Knights had at least five kills, led by nine from
Maddie Sehrt, who also hit .474. Enfield added eight, Ryan had six and Joseph chipped in five.
Julia Paliwodzinski rang up 32 assists and added nine digs, with
Emily Eng posting a team-best 14 digs.
Â
Arcadia is at Juniata on Saturday for a pair of matches beginning at 3:30 p.m. when AU tangles with Marymount looking for consecutive win number nine.
