ELIZABETHTOWN, PA: (Oct. 16, 2010) - Arcadia's
Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) is making a strong case for her third-straight All Conference nod. The junior defender scored her team leading 6th goal of the season, 4:40 into today's second overtime period at host Elizabethtown College to put an end to a scoreless game in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action. The goal was also her third game winner of the season and couldn't have come at a better time for the #5 Knights who improve to 11-3-1 overall and 3-1 within the Commonwealth as Arcadia remains in strong contention to pursue another shot at the league championship in early November. With three league games remaining on their schedule, Arcadia will face Albright on the road (10/19) before closing out the home slate against Lebanon Valleyon 10/23 and Alvernia on 10/30.
The wind silenced both team's offensive accuracy as two of the Knights three first half shots sailed high. Etown keeper Jess Manchak was forced to make one save in the 17th minute on Arcadia first year
Sara Volk-Perez (Mays Landing, PA/Oakcrest) while sophomore keeper
Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) turned away three Blue Jays on their three first half on-target chances midway through the opening half.
Still scoreless at the start of the second, Law's save on Kristin Eck in the 60th minute turned out to be Etown's best and only chance of the half, while Arcadia's would come with three minutes remaining in regulation when Manchak turned away a decent look by Arcadia first year
Fatima Elmeddkhar (Middletown, DE/Middletown) to force extra minutes.
During the first overtime, Etown would enjoy a 3-0 advantage in shots, unfortunately, two of those missed the frame and Law made another game-saving stop, this time on Blue Jay Elise Carabello to preserve the scoreless game and force one final ten minue sudden death stanza. The Knights were the first team to connect on a shot in the second OT, however, the shot by senior
Stephanie Edson (Milton, PA/Milton) sailed wide. Etown's Laura Wingert was the next player to get off a shot, but again, the wind carried her ball high over the Arcadia goal. In the 103rd minute, the Knights were about to make a move when the officials called them offsides. It wouldn't matter though, because Arcadia quickly regained possession and one minute later senior
Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) sent an untouched through ball into Drosdak who chipped the game winner over the head of Manchak to seal the victory for Arcadia.
Today's win was the third straight for Arcadia over Etown dating back to last season's 3-0 win in the league semifinals. It's also the second straight for the Knights and the 8th win decided by a one goal margin. Law would finish with 5 saves to record her 6th shutout on the year. The sophomore keeper now owns 17 career shutouts, putting her with one of sole-possession of the school's all-time mark. The Blue Jays finished with a 9-6 edge in shots and 3-2 margin in corner opportunities.
Arcadia will look to keep it going and make it three in a row when they travel to Reading this Tuesday for a 4 PM Commonwealth Conference match.
