WILLIAMSPORT, PA: (Oct. 2, 2010) - First year
Sara Volk-Perez (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and senior
Stephanie Edson (Milton, PA/Milton) scored goals for Arcadia University as the Knights won a 2-1 battle over host Lycoming College in Commonwealth Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. Jumping up two slots to #5 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mid-Atlantic
rankings, the Knights (9-2-1, 1-0 CC), following an 0-2 start to the season, are undefeated in their last nine. Lycoming, drops to 6-3 overall (0-1 CC).
Both keepers were tested in the first half as momentum exchanged hands repeatedly. Lycoming keeper Caitlin Dougherty stopped Arcadia senior
Janelle Jablonski (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) twice in the early going while Knight's keeper, sophomore
Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains Fanwood) made four different Warrior players shake their heads as she turned aside their attempts. Finally, the Knights prevailed when Volk-Perez converted her third shot on goal of the half into the game's first score in the 34th minute. It was the first year's first collegiate goal and it was assisted by junior
Brittany Drosdak (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic). Lycoming was able to connect for two more shots on the Arcadia net in the remaining minutes of the first half but Law stood tall and preserved her team's 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Doughtery continued to salvage her team's 1-0 deficit as the keeper turned away three different Knights in the opening minutes of the second half. Arcadia's offensive pressure and the solid play through the midfield and back line kept the Warriors shot-less for thirty minutes. When Lycoming did find their first opening of the second half, they made it count with a goal by Leslie Kester, assisted by Spencer Larson in the 75th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Five minutes later Volk-Perez would be denied the go-ahead by Dougherty but the Knights were awarded a corner chance off the play. Senior
Katie O'Malley (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) served up the corner into Volk-Perez whose volley landed on the nogen of Edson which she directed into the twine in the 80th minute putting Arcadia back on top 2-1. It was Edson's second goal of the season and would stand as the game winner.
Law tacked on her 8th win of the season as she improves to 8-2-1 overall. She made 7 saves in today's win. Dougherty would finish with 6 save for Lycoming. The Knights owned the advantage in both shots (14-9) and corner chances (7-1).
Arcadia returns to action next weekend, hosting Messiah College at 12 Noon on The New Field.
