Arcadia tops Lycoming 2-1 at home

Head Coach Brownell records 100th career win

GLENSIDE, Pa.:  Sophomores Sara Volk-Perez (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Samantha Davis (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored a goal apiece to lead Arcadia University Women's Soccer to a 2-1 win over visiting Lycoming College in Saturday's Commonwealth Conference match-up.  Head coach Rick Brownell, in his ninth season at the helm, reached the 100-win milestone with today's victory.

The win came in front of family, friends and alumni on the University's Family Weekend, and improves Arcadia to 9-3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Lycoming drops to 2-11 overall and 0-4 against league opponents.

Volk-Perez now leads the team with 8 goals while this marks Davis' 3rd goal of the season.  Junior keeper Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains) made three saves on the day.

After a scoreless 40 minutes of the opening half, Volk-Perez went to work off an assist from sophomore Rachel Dolly (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) to put the Knights up 1-0 at 40:02.  Lycoming responded quickly with a score of their own by Molly Russell at the 42:13 mark and the two teams headed into halftime tied 1-1.

The Knights finally broke through just 8 minutes into the second half.  Arcadia regained the one-goal lead when Davis put the ball short side past Lycoming keeper Caitlin Dougherty in the 53rd minute.  The assist went to Volk-Perez, her first helper of the season and the goal would stand as the game winner, helping the Knights to snap a two-game skid.  Lycoming gave a strong defensive effort over the final 37 minutes but it was not enough to hold the Knights back as Arcadia finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots. Dougherty finished with 5 stops in the loss for Lycoming.

Coach Brownell has established the Arcadia University Women's Soccer program as a consistent top contender in Division III soccer with a 100-51-19 overall record to date, where the program has made 8 consecutive trips to post-season play and battled in 4 conference championship finals in over his tenure.  Having amassed a 43-19-10 record against conference opponents since his inaugural season in 2003, Arcadia has made conference championship post-season appearances in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (2003-2006), Freedom Conference (2007) and the Commonwealth Conference (2008-2010), garnering a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference(PAC) Championship in 2005.  Consistently ranked as one of the top teams within the Mid-Atlantic region, earlier this month, on Oct. 4, Arcadia garnered their first national ranking in the history of the program, recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as the No. 24 team within Division III.  The team is currently ranked 5th in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The Knights look to keep the pace going with four more conference matches to go as they strive for their program's ninth consecutive post-season appearance. Up next, the Knights travel to conference foe Lebanon Valley on Tuesday, Oct. 18.  Kick-off is set for 4 PM.
