Women's Soccer, Widener draw scoreless

CHESTER, Pa.:  The playoff push for Arcadia University Women's Soccer draws down to Saturday's regular season finale after the Knights and Widener University played to a scoreless draw after double overtime this afternoon in Chester, Pa.

It's the second scoreless double overtime draw for the Knights in their last two chances, but each time, Arcadia has been able to pick up a critical point in the league standings. Arcadia now owns 8 points as the team looks to Saturday's road match at Alvernia University for a spot in the tournament.

Facing some strong defensive teams throughout the season, Arcadia has never relinquished in a persistent attacking game. With many of those defensive battles coming in the last eight outings, making due on that offensive persistence has proved difficult. Although generating goals on those chances has become tougher, the Knights are relying on their own veteran defensive play which is forcing their opponents into similar territory. And this afternoon was no different as both teams were determined to improve their positioning for a post-season berth.

With no score or decision after regulation, the Knights looked to sophomore Alex Davis (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), who took a game high 8 shots, 3 of which landed on goal, the biggest one coming in the first overtime when her shot ricocheted off the left goal post, bringing a sigh of relief from the home crowd.

The Knights (9-4-3/ 2-2-2 CC) out-shot Widener (7-6-2, 2-3-1 CC) 14-8 and 3-1 over both overtimes.  Both goalkeepers made equally huge stops for their teams, and each with one during the second overtime stanza, with Arcadia starter Jackie Law (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) finishing with 4 and Widener's Venessa Hejnas making 6.

Saturday's game against the Crusaders will begin at 6:30 p.m.
