Arcadia Baseball Pounces Early, Upends St. Joseph's 12-2

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 13, 2012) - Arcadia University Baseball ran circles around St. Joseph's (NY) starter Kenny Smith before he retired on a no-hitter of sorts, after he pegged two and dished out 3 walks and a wild pitch through his first six batters. Although the Knights left the bases loaded, that mess allowed Arcadia a 3-0 lead after one to begin a hitters clinic Friday afternoon at Erny Field with the Knights getting back on the victory train with a 12-2 decision over the Bears.

Today's win snaps a four-game slide and gives the teama dozen wins on the season (12-17) as they head into a Saturday afternoon doubleheader tomorrow (April 14, 1 p.m.) against John Jay College.

With just two runs to his line, winning pitcher Jordan Hofferman '13 worked his way through the complete game, his fourth of that fashion in six chances, scattering 10 hits and a walk with 4 K's.  Hofferman sports a team-best .258 ERA and is 5-1 through his 6 starts.

Justin Simpson '14 produced a perfect day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with 3 runs scored along with a beauty of a catch along the right center fence in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom of the second, Arcadia pelted three straight hits at right fielder Joe Mendez, a lead-off triple from Kyle Jackson followed by singles from Brandon Martin '14 (RBI) and Simpson to take a 4-0 lead after two.

St. Joseph's got on the board with a one-run top of three but Arcadia turned in two in the home half.  Bear's reliever Chris Cuttrone gave up back to back triples to Arcadia's Simpson and Jay Zehring '14 (RBI) while Pat Kwiatkowski '15 found a hole in left field (RBI) lifting the Knights out to a 6-1 advantage.

Scoring for the Bears ceased after the fifth when they plated the second of their two scores this afternoon, meanwhile Arcadia kept the hits coming, this time, using a four-run eighth against the Bear's fourth pitcher Chris Vargas, highlighted a by two-run blast from Jerry Smith that rested just against the right center fence for a double.

Hofferman sealed the deal in the top of the ninth with two strikouts after the Bear placed two runners on.

Arcadia made no errors and out-hit St. Joseph's (3E) 11-10.

Following tomorrow's doubleheader, Arcadia plays at Penn State Abington next Wednesday (April 18) before returning to business on their Commonwealth schedule when they open their series with Messiah at Erny Field on Friday, April 20.
