Brett Mariani
Assistant Athletic Director

How long have you been at Arcadia and how did you end of working here?

I have been at Arcadia a little over a year and I started in July, 2019. I came from Immaculata University where I was an Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director, but I wanted to solely be an administrator, which Arcadia offered. I was also drawn to Arcadia due to their rising success in their athletic department and how highly regarded it was by some of my former colleagues of mine at Immaculata who now work at Arcadia.

What is your role and your responsibilities at Arcadia?

I am an assistant athletic director and my main role is the business management of all of our athletic programs and the department as a whole.  I also oversee eight sports as their administrator: men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, and men's and women's volleyball.

Where did you graduate college and where are you originally from?

I am originally from the Exton/Downingtown, Pa. area. I attended Villanova University for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Did you play any sports in high school or college?

Throughout high school I played baseball and then considered myself a multi-sport intramural star at Villanova in volleyball, basketball, slow pitch softball, and flag football.

What do you enjoy the most about working at Arcadia? What is the best memory you have working in our athletics staff?

I really enjoy the camaraderie amongst our athletic staff. I knew some of them before arriving, but I have made some really awesome connections and relationships with a lot of new people that foster a really enjoyable working experience. Everyone we work with across campus has been really great in getting to know us, as well. From the staff outing to throwing axes, it was all a lot of fun and a great way to get everyone together outside of the office.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside Arcadia? What are some interesting things people may not know about you?

I absolutely love to play golf and will take any chance I get to go play. It's harder with one kid - and since another is on the way - it's even harder to find time, but it's my favorite thing to do by far. I really enjoy watching sports at all levels, and I love the beach. I could sit there from sun up to sun down.

Some interesting things that people may not know about me are I ran an American Legion baseball program for nine years as the head coach. I also work as a freelance statistician for TV networks and have gotten to see some very cool events from the front row because of it. I have been able to see things such as 76ers playoff games, Big 5 college basketball games (both men and women), NCAA men's basketball regional tournament games, college football games, and Phillies and Eagles games. I also enjoy playing music which all started from me playing the trombone throughout my high school career. In my earlier years I was an Eagle Scout, too.

What makes Arcadia student-athletes special to you?

Their drive to be great both on and off the field of play. They commit themselves so much to being successful in the classroom, in the weightroom, and on the playing field...it's very admirable for a college student.

How are you coping with the challenges that the COVID-19 has brought on, and what is one piece of advice you have for student-athletes dealing with similar challenges?

I have a two-and-a-half year old son named Max at home, and my wife and I are expecting a baby girl in October. It's been a lot of spending time with the family and trying to keep my son entertained! This time has been stressful on many fronts, but I realize that I will not have this kind of opportunity again to spend this much time with my family uninterrupted, so we've been fortunate in that regard.

I would tell the student-athletes to try and enjoy and maximize the time that they have with their family and friends while they are homebound. It's such a rare opportunity, and though the circumstances of why we are forced to be home are not fun, the result is we get to enjoy the company of those we love while not being on the go all the time.

If you didn't work in college athletics, what would you be doing?

I would most likely be a high school history teacher.  My undergraduate degrees are in History and Secondary Education, and my graduate degree is in Education. My original intention was to become a high school history teacher, but then I got a graduate assistant position which presented another option. So when I finished grad school, I interviewed for jobs in athletics and teaching. That's when I received the offer at Immaculata and decided to pursue that. To this day I'm very happy I did.
