Men's Golf Sits Third After Opening Round of DeSales Spring Classic

NEW TRIPOLI, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's golf team opened its spring season Friday at the DeSales Spring Classic, held at Olde Homestead Golf Club in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania. The par-72 course plays at 6,517 yards. After round one, the Knights sit in third place out of eight teams with a 312 (+24), led by Frankie Sass, who fired an even-par 72 to pace the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sass holds a one-shot lead after carding a 72 in the opening round. He posted a 37 (+1) on the front nine and a 35 (-1) on the back. Sass opened with back-to-back pars before recording his lone bogey of the front on the par-4 third hole. He closed the front nine with six consecutive pars. On the back, Sass began with four straight pars before recording his first birdie of the day on the par-4 14th. He followed with two pars, added another birdie on the par-3 17th, and closed with a bogey on 18 to finish at even par.

Nicky Antonelli was second for the Knights and tied for eighth overall with a 79 (+7). He shot 43 (+7) on the front, opening with three bogeys before settling in with a par on the fourth and finishing the nine with two more pars. Antonelli rebounded on the back with an even-par 36, highlighted by birdies on holes 10, 12, and 18. He added two pars, a double bogey on 14, and a bogey down the stretch.

Tony Antonelli finished third for Arcadia and is tied for 11th after posting an 80 (+8). He carded a 42 (+6) on the front nine with three pars and a birdie on the par-4 seventh. On the back, he shot 38 (+2), opening with a birdie on 10 and adding five pars to go along with three bogeys.

Hayden Williamson rounded out the team scoring with an 81 (+9), placing him in a tie for 16th. He recorded a 38 (+2) on the front with five pars and a birdie on the par-5 eighth. Williamson shot 43 (+7) on the back, tallying four pars.

Justin Madden finished with an 87 (+15) and is tied for 27th. His score did not factor into the team total. Madden shot 44 (+8) on the front and 43 (+7) on the back, recording four pars on each nine.

Chad Jones competed as an individual and posted a 93 (+21), placing him in a tie for 39th. He carded a 49 (+13) on the front with four pars before improving by five strokes on the back with a 44 (+8), highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 12th and three additional pars.

Scranton leads the field with a 308 (+20), followed by Albright B at 311 (+23), just ahead of Arcadia. The Knights hold a 14-stroke advantage over DeSales, with Muhlenberg, Lebanon Valley, Misericordia, and DeSales B rounding out the standings.

The Knights return to Olde Homestead Golf Club to complete the final round of the DeSales Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon.
