Community Service

The Arcadia University Department of Athletics & Recreation values its relationships with local organizations, and in recent years, many Arcadia student-athletes and staff have donated their time and energy to giving back to the community. Community service projects span over the course of the entire academic year. This year the commitment to community service continues.

2017-2018 Community Service Activities to Date
August 25:
Athletic Department - New Student Move-In Day - 158 Student-Athletes/18 Staff Members - 3 Hour Event - 528 Total Hours
Representatives from the Arcadia Athletics Department assisted the over 500 incoming students of the Class of 2021 with moving into their dorms prior to the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

August 26:
Field Hockey - Phillies Red Goes Green - 25 Student-Athletes/3 coaches - 4 Hour Event - 112 Total Hours
The Arcadia University field hockey team, along with its coaches, gave time to help protect the environment as they participated in the Philadelphia Phillies Red Goes Green campaign by collecting recycling.

September 7:
Women's Basketball - Hurricane Harvey T-Shirt Sale
The women's basketball team sold t-shirts to help raise money for the hurricane relief efforts in Texas as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

September 15-16:
Men's Volleyball - St. Paul's Lutheran Church Oktoberfest - 13 Student-Athletes/1Coach - 3 Hour Event - 43 Total Hours
The men's volleyball team lent a helping hand at Oktoberfest held by St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glenside. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Lutheran Disaster Response and F.A.R.M. (Faith Alliance for Refugees in Montgomery County)

September 17:
Men's and Women's Tennis - Philly Rock and Roll Half Marathon - 20 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 6 Hour Event - 132 Total Hours
At the Philly Rock and Roll Half Marathon, the team helped with set up and breakdown, while also providing water and Gatorade to the runners. The event benefitted the American Association for Cancer Research. The proceeds help raise awareness and critical funds to fight more than 200 types of childhood and adult cancers.

September 23:
Softball - Friends of Jaclyn Movie Night - 21 Student-Athletes/Coaches - 2 Hour Event - 42 Total Hours
This Fall the softball team spent time with our Friends of Jaclyn team Member, Jordyn. On September 23rd the team gathered at Jordyn's families house to watch an outdoor movie in their backyard.

September 23:
Field Hockey - Mary's Place by the Sea - 28 Student-Athletes/Coaches - 2 Hour Event - 56 Total Hours
The field hockey team raised money for an alumni's mother who was fighting breast cancer. Mary's Place by the Sea is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women who are receiving treatment for cancer. They provide services that complement patients medical treatment, including oncology massages, nutrition education, individual counseling, expressive writing, reflexology, Reiki, guided meditation, prayer, and yoga...at no cost to their guests. Their integrative services provide guests rest and support during this challenging time in their lives. They are empowered with knowledge that will aid them on their road to healing.

September 27:
Men's/Women's Swimming - International Water Safety Foundation Tread-A-Thon - 35 Student-Athletes/Staff - 1 Hour Event - 35 Total Hours
In the Tread-A-Thon, the teams helped raise awareness and funds to prevent the global drowning pandemic. They also donated $410 to swim programs across the country that would be able to help people learn how to swim. While taking part in this event, the World Record for most people treading water in multiple locations at the same time was broken.

September 28:
Athletic Department - Conditioning for Childhood Cancer - 314 Student-Athletes/Staff - 1 Hour Event - 314 Total Hours
Led by the Arcadia Women's basketball team, the Arcadia Athletic Department was able to raise $1,119 for Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation, while raising awareness for childhood cancer. [Full Story]

October 1:
Softball - CHOP Buddy Walk and Family Fun Day - 17 Student-Athletes/Staff - 3 Hour Event - 51 Total Hours
At the 2017 CHOP Buddy Walk and Family Fun Day, the team helped with registration, getting waivers signed, and cheering on all the families, friends and teams as they walked into the stadium. The annual CHOP Buddy Walk supports ongoing research, clinical care for individuals with Down Syndrome and allows for community members, families and medical providers to learn more about Down Syndrome.

October 23:
Men's and Women's Tennis - Windscreen Takedown - 16 Student-Athletes/Staff - 1.5 Hour Event - 24 Total Hours
The Knights helped the Arcadia facilities crew with the takedown of the new windscreens at Weiss Courts.

October 31:
Softball - Friends of Jaclyn Trick-Or-Treating - 21 Student-Athletes/Coaches - 2 Hour Event - 42 Total Hours
For the second year in a row, the softball team dressed up and went trick-or-treating with Jordyn, her family, and a few friends.

November 4:
Men's Volleyball - Craig Heisey 5K - 13 Student-Athletes - 2.5 Hour Event - 32.5 Total Hours
Members of the men's volleyball teams supported the cause through handing out water to participants, course direction or running. Victoria Heisey, for whom the Kids' Fun Run is in memory of, passed away from Leukemia and was a former player for Arcadia head volleyball coach Eli Porr.

November 6:
Men's Lacrosse - Movember Fundraising - 45 Student-Athletes/Staff - 1 Hour Event - 45 Total Hours
In early November, 42 student-athletes and three coaches spent an hour on campus kicking off our campaign for Movember. The Movember foundation raises money and funds to support men's health initiatives in the month of November. This year our team raised $2,230.

November 11:
Softball - Habitat For Humanity - 9 Student-Athletes/Staff - 4.5 Hour Event - 40.5 Total Hours
The team helped unload donations from cars and put price tags and description tags on them. They moved different items from the warehouse to the store to be sold. Some of the team members helped with cleaning duties while others helped carry purchased donations to their cars.

Baseball - Mt. Airy Little League End of Season Cleanup - 36 Student-Athletes/Staff - 3 Hour Event - 108 Total Hours
At the end of their season, Mt. Airy Little League had a cleanup of their facilities. The baseball team help cut and installed turf for their dugouts, bullpens, and batting cages along with taking down netting and windscreens for winter storage.

November 30, 2017 - March 1, 2018:
Men's and Women's Tennis - Afterschool Tennis Program at Wyncote Elementary - 3 Student-Athletes and 1 Coach - 51.5 Hours - 206 Total Hours
Three student-athletes and one coach engaged with the local community by teaching kids the game of tennis in a safe, after school environment.

December 2:
Softball - Habitat For Humanity - 10 Student-Athletes/Staff - 4.5 Hour Event - 45 Total Hours

December 2:
Men's/Women's Volleyball - Starlings Volleyball Clinic - 6 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 12 Total Hours
In a joint effort, the men's and women's volleyball team went to the Starlings Volleyball Clinic to teach local Philadelphia middle school aged students how to play volleyball.

December 5-12:
Field Hockey - Holiday Cards for the Homeless - 40 Student-Athletes - 1 Hour Event - 47 Total Hours
The field hockey team made cards for the homeless to try and spread holiday cheer.

December 12:
Women's Soccer - Dog Walking - 13 Student-Athletes - 1 Hour Event - 13 Total Hours
Thirteen women's soccer players took time out of their finals week studies to walk dogs who are cared for by the National Greyhound Adoption Center in Northeast Philadelphia. All of the dogs are rescues and the student-athletes spent one hour helping other volunteers walk each dog.

January 15:
Women's Volleyball - MLK Day Volunteer Event - 11 Student-Athletes - 3 Hour Event - 33 Total Hours
Eleven student-athletes from the women's volleyball team volunteered at the MLK Day event on campus, where they helped dispose of recyclable goods.

January 15:
Men's and Women's Golf - MLK Day Volunteer Event - 18 Student-Athletes - 3 Hour Event - 54 Total Hours
Student-athletes from both the men's and women's golf teams got together to unload and sort through various items that were either to be donated to non-profit organizations or shredded and recycled.

January 15:
Men's Basketball - MLK Day Volunteer Event - 15 Student-Athletes and 4 Coaches - 6 Hour Event - 114 Total Hours
15 student-athletes and four coaches helped gather together donations of various items from the community to local nonprofit organizations, some of which would go toward victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. They also assisted in shredding, repurposing, and the proper disposing of eWaste.

January 27:
Athletics Department - National Girls and Women in Sports Day - 46 Student-Athletes and 3 Coaches - 3 Hour Event - 147 Total Hours
Student-athletes from various teams helped get girls involved in sports by exposing them and teaching them multiple different sports.

February 20:
Men's Lacrosse - Volunteer at Philabundance - 9 Student-Athletes and 4 Coaches - 3 Hours - 39 Total Hours
Nine student-athletes and four coaches volunteered at Philabundance, where they helped package food to be donated to communities in need.

April 2:
SAAC - Arcadia Food Pantry
Arcadia's SAAC collected as many nonperishable food items as possible to jump start the new Arcadia University food pantry, which aims to assist the Arcadia community with food insecurities on campus by letting these students "shop" for food on campus.

April 8:
Men's/Women's Swimming - Arcadia SportsFest - 20 Student-Athletes and 2 Coaches - 4 Hour Event - 88 Total Hours
Members of the men's and women's swim teams helped integrate Special Olympics athletes with the student-athlete population at Arcadia. The team members helped Special Olympic athletes with water-related sports and promoted positive engagement between Special Olympics athletes and members of the Arcadia swim program.

April 8:
Men's/Women's Golf - ASAA Sportsfest Rotary Special Olympics of Montgomery County - 16 Student-Athletes - 4 Hour Event - 64 Total Hours
Members of the men's and women's golf teams helped run activities and set up. During the event, Special Olympics athletes and their families played different sports and took part in various different events throughout the day.

April 21:
Field Hockey - Clean Oceans Actions Beach Sweep - 15 Student-Athletes - 4 Hours - 60 Total Hours
15 student-athletes helped clean the beach in Manasquan, New Jersey.

April 28:
Men's/Women's Cross Country - Wissahickon Trail Cleanup - 11 Student-Athletes and 1 Coach - 2.5 Hours - 30 Total Hours
11 student-athletes and one coach helped clean up a section of the Philadelphia Trail System and protect the local wildlife by getting rid of waste and litter left on the trail. More than 80 bags of recycle goods and waste was collected at the end of the cleanup.

Ongoing Event:
Men's and Women's Tennis - REAL Tennis Clinic
As part of Arcadia's Raising Expectations for Academic Learning (REAL) Certificate program, the men's and women's tennis teams holds weekly clinics. The REAL Certificate offers students with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the same learning environments available to same-age peers in an academic-, vocational- and social inclusion-focused program.

Women's Volleyball - Special Olympics Volleyball Clinic - 3 Student-Athletes - 38 Hours - 114 Total Hours
Three student-athletes from the women's volleyball team assisted with teaching Special Olympics kids volleyball and helping run drills.

Men's Volleyball - Special Olympics Volleyball Clinic - 2 Student-Athletes - 2 Hours - 24 Total Hours
Two student-athletes from the men's volleyball team assist with teaching Special Olympics kids volleyball and helping run drills.

Multiple Teams - Dome Setup/Breakdown - 182 Student-Athletes/Staff - 1 Hour Event - 182 Total Hours

As a collective, multiple teams aided the Arcadia facilities staff in setting up and breaking down the dome in which students university wide use for recreation.
