Community Service 2016-17

The Arcadia University Department of Athletics & Recreation values its relationships with local organizations, and in recent years, many Arcadia student-athletes and staff have donated their time and energy to giving back to the community. Community service projects span over the course of the entire academic year. This year the commitment to community service continues.

2016-2017 Community Service Activities to Date

August 26:
Arcadia University Freshmen Move-In Day - 170 Student-Athletes/23 Staff - 675.5 Total Hours

Members of Arcadia's field hockey, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country and women's volleyball teams took time out of their preseason routines to help, along with many other student-athletes and staff members from the athletic department, to help the Arcadia University Class of 2020 move into their dorms prior to the start of the 2016-17 academic year.

August 29:
Field Hockey - Phillies Game Recycle Pick Up - 23 Student-Athletes/3 Staff Members - 5 Hour Event - 130 Total Hours
The Arcadia University field hockey team, along with its coaches, gave their time and helped protect the environment at the same time as they collected recyclables from the stands at Citizen's Bank Park during a Philadelphia Phillies game to help reduce waste. [Full Story]

September 27:
Conditioning for Childhood Cancer Bandana Day - 244 Student-Athletes/8 Staff Members - 1 Hour Event - 252 Total Hours
Lead by the Arcadia Women's basketball team, the Arcadia Athletic Department was able to raise $915 for Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation, while raising awareness for childhood cancer. [Full Story]

October 1:
Field Hockey - Multiple Myeloma Awareness T-shirt Sale - Untimed Event
The Arcadia University field hockey team helped raise awareness and money for Multiple Myeloma research through the sale of t-shirts. The Knights raised $1,200 dollars for the cause and also recognized the cause as part their game against Hood on October 1.

October 1:
Softball - Breast Cancer T-Shirt Sale - Untimed Event
The softball team t-shirts throughout campus to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. Portions of the sales were donated to the Avon Foundation. 

October 12:
Men's and Women's Golf - Cupcakes for a Cause - 10 Student-Athletes - 1 Hour Event - 10 Total Hours
The student-athletes aided in Student Health Services Cupcakes for a Cause by baking and selling cupcakes from which the proceeds helped raise money for breast Cancer Research at Abington Health Clinic. 

October 13:
Softball - Friends of Jaclyn Pumpkin Painting - 15 Student-Athletes/1 Coach - 2 Hour Event - 32 Total Hours
The Knights continue their relationship with Friends of Jaclyn adoptee Jordyn Visalli. (click here for full story on Jordyn Viaslli's adoption) The team spent the night with Jordyn getting ready for Halloween by painting pumpkins. [Full story]

October 31:
Softball - Friends of Jaclyn Trick or Treat - 15 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches- 2.5 Hour Event - 42.5 Total Hours
In continuing their relationship with Friends of Jaclyn adoptee Jordyn Visalli, the softball team accompanied Jordyn for some Halloween Trick-or-Treating. [Full Story]

October 1 - November 1:
Athletic Training and SAAC - Knights Fighting Needs Food Drive
The Arcadia University athletic training staff, along with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, collected 995 pounds of non-parishable food items which was donated to Philabundance. [Full Story]

November 5:
Men's and Women's Volleyball - 9th Annual Craig Heisey Memorial 5K/8th Annual Victoria Heisey Kids' Fun Run - 25 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 7 Hour Event - 189 Total Hours
Members of the men's and women's volleyball teams combined to support the cause through handing out water to participants, course direction or running. Victoria Heisey, for whom the Kids’ Fun Run is in memory of, passed away from Leukemia and was a former player for Arcadia head volleyball coach Eli Porr. [Full Story]

November 7:
Athletic Department - It's On Us Escalation Workshop - 283 Student-Athletes/3 Coaches - 2 Hour Event - 572 Total Hours
Led by Arcadia's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the One Love Foundation, members of all 19 varsity sports took part in a workshop to bring awareness to domestic violence and ways to prevent instances of domestic violence from happening. Team participation was as follows:

Women's Lacrosse - It's On Us Campaign - 17 Student-Athletes - 106 Hours
The women's lacrosse team was a driving force behind Arcadia's involvement in the It's On Us Campaign and support of the One Love Foundation. They were involved in everything from the set-up of the event to capturing the day via photos and video to helping with the administration of the self-defense class. Overall, the team and coaches were responsible for the vast majority of the behind the scenes work to make this event possible. 

November 12:
Softball - Walk to End Alzheimer's - 16 Student-Athletes/1 Coach - 5 Hour Event - 85 Total Hours
The softball team helped direct and assist participants in the Walk to End Alzheimer's held at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. [Full Story]

November 14:
Men's Lacrosse - Philabundance Food Sorting - 15 Student-Athletes - 3 Hour Event - 45 Total Hours
Members of the men's lacrosse team went to Philabundance to help sort donated food and packed senior boxes to provide hunger relief for senior citizens in need during winter months. [Full Story]

November 18:
Men's and Women's Cross Country - Wissahickon Creek/Forbidden Drive Clean-Up - 16 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 3 Hour Event - 54 Total Hours
The men's and women's cross country teams took some time to help clean and maintain Wissahickon Creek and Forbidden Drive, a trail the Knights frequently run on throughout the season. [Full Story]

Softball - Bingo Night at Lakeview School - 8 Student-Athletes - 4 Hour Event - 32 Total Hours
Student-athletes from the softball team volunteered their time to help at the Lakeview School's bingo night. They called numbers, helped with registration and organization and spent valuable time with the students of Lakeview. [Full Story]

November 19:
Baseball - Mt. Airy Little League Field Clean-Up - 36 Student-Athletes/1 Coach - 3 Hours Event - 111 Total Hours
The baseball team helped out a local little league, bu fixing up the Mt. Airy Little League fields.

November 26:
Men's Basketball - Ruck for a Cause - 14 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 7 Hour Event - 112 Total Hours
Members of the men's basketball team walked from ENON Tabernacle Baptist Church to the Philadelphia Convention Center and back (16 total miles). Along the way, the team stopped in high volume homeless areas to hand out goods such as hats, scarves, gloves, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, snacks and water to those in need. 

November 1-November 30:
Men's Lacrosse - Movember Campaign - 44 Student-Athletes/3 Coaches - 2 Hour Event - 94 Total Hours
The men's lacrosse team helped bring awareness to men's health and the Movember Foundation. To open the Movember Campaign, the team welcomed guest speaker Adam Silva to present his experiences in a presentation called "Be a Man". [Full Story]

November 7-December 5:
SAAC - Book and Toy Drive - Untimed Event
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, along with Arcadia's chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Zeta Nu, collected books and toys to donate to a local women's shelter. [Full Story]

January 16:
Athletic Department - MLK Day of Service - 78 Student-Athletes - 382.5 Total Hours
The event benefited many local non-profit organizations, including Philadelphia SPCA, Salvation Army, Habitat Restore and more through the donations of the Glenside community. Those that volunteered aided in the unloading of donated goods from cars and loading up trucks to take the donations to the various non-profit organizations in the area. The event also included free secure shredding of old documents.

February 12:
Baseball - Phillies Urban Youth Academy - 35 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 4 Hour Event - 148 Total Hours
Players and coaches helped out at a free clinic for the Phillies Urban Youth Academy. The Knights helped at two separate clinics, one for ages 9-12 and one for ages 13-18, instructing on pitching, hitting and defense. The multi-site Phillies MLB Youth Academy is comprised of both outdoor and indoor facilities to provide free, year-round instruction to the more than 8,000 Phillies Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) players in Philadelphia.

March 9:
Women's Soccer - Cards for Kids - 8 Student-Athletes - 1 Hour Event - 8 Total Hours

Players from the women's soccer team made funny and encouraging cards to donate to the children at St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

March 18:
Men's Lacrosse - Campus Snow Removal - 25 Student-Athletes/3 Coaches - 1 Hour Event - 28 Total Hours
The men's lacrosse team helped dig out the some on campus following the snow storm over Spring Break. By digging the dome out, the team enabled campus facilities to successfully take the dome down. 

March 25:
Sports Fest - 17 Student-Athletes - 94 Total Hours
More than 80 Montgomery County Rotary Special Athletes (MCRSA) joined representatives of Arcadia Special Athletes Association (ASAA) for a day of soccer, volleyball, swimming and relay races for the annual Sportsfest. The event continues to build upon the strong relationship the University forged with MCRSA more than 25 years ago

March 29:
Women's Soccer - Dinner with St. Lukes - 11 Student-Athletes - 7.5 Hours Event - 82.5 Total Hours

Players help prep, cook and serve dinner at a community meal with St. Luke's Church in Glenside. Players also set tables, cleaned, and spent time with community members.

April 3-9:
SAAC - D3 Week - Untimed Event 
The Arcadia University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped raise $1,200 for the Special Olympics during NCAA Division III Week. The money was raised through t-shirt sales, 50/50 raffles, a student-athlete picnic and admission at an on-campus women's lacrosse game. 

April 30:
Men's Lacrosse - HEADstrong 5K - 38 Players/2 Coaches - 1 Hour Event - 40 Total Hours
On Sunday, April 30th the Cullinan family held the 1st Annual Ripple Run 5K/1M to honor the life and legacy of the late Pat Cullinan. This is an incredible event for the entire family featuring a challenging 5K race and 1 Mile Run/Walk through Wilson Park. Proceeds from the Ripple Run will support the HEADstrong Foundation and their relentless efforts to improve lives affected by cancer

Field Hockey - MS Walk - 12 Student-Athletes - 3 Hours Each - 36 Total Hours
Members of the Arcadia field hockey team participated in a walk for multiple sclerosis to help raise awareness. 

April 5:
Women's Soccer - Girls Soccer Clinic at Enon Church - 14 Student-Athletes - 5 Hour Event - 70 Total Hours
The women's soccer team led a free clinic for girls ages 8-17 that included games and technical stations while building excitement and fun around soccer.

Spring Semester:
Men's Soccer - Stenton Family Manor Volunteering - 3 Players per day, Two days per week - 3 Hour Visits - 216 Total Hours
The Arcadia University men’s soccer team volunteered time at Stenton Family Manor in the spring semester, helping kids with homework and doing activities such as playing sports.

Men's and Women's Tennis - REAL Tennis Clinics - 10 Student-Athletes/1 Coach - 67 Total Hours
The Arcadia University tennis teams partnered with Arcadia’s Raising Expectations for Academic Learning (REAL) Program to hold three clincs with program members. The program is a two-ear academic, vocational and social inclusion-focused program for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Men's and Women's Tennis - Retired Greyhound Dog Walking - 7.5 Total Hours

Student-athletes from Arcadia's tennis teams took time to walk retired racing greyhounds that are awaiting adoption.
