Know Your Knights: Michael Hebenstreit

Michael Hebenstreit
Assistant Director of Athletics

How long have you been at Arcadia? How did you end of working here?

I have been at Arcadia for seven years. I ended up at Arcadia originally as the Director of Intramurals after serving in a similar role at Fairleigh Dickinson's Florham Campus where I was a graduate assistant for two years. After FDU, I worked in New York at an international marketing service agency called MKTG Inc. During the year at MKTG, I primarily worked on the team's NIKE account where we ran activations at many popular events.

What is your role and some of your responsibilities at Arcadia?

As Assistant Director of Athletics, I am mainly responsible for a lot of the behind the scenes items that make games go on. I coordinate all away team travel with the bus companies that we use, as well as scheduling of the three campus vans, and occasionally Enterprise when we need to rent vans. I also work with our official assignors to make sure that we have officials for all home games. All home and away game contracts also come through me for review and final signature to let opposing teams know that we are on the same page for a game. Another major responsibility of mine is oversight of many of our department initiatives such as the golf outing, banquet, and hall of fame induction to name a few.

Where did you graduate college? Where are you originally from?

I graduated from Saint Joseph's College of Maine in 2009 where I also played baseball during all four years of my undergraduate studies. Right after graduation, I attended graduate school at Fairleigh Dickinson University where I graduated in 2011. I am originally from Centerville, Massachusetts, which is located on Cape Cod.

What is your favorite professional team(s)?

Definitely not a fan favorite for this area. On Sundays between September and February, you can find me watching every snap of a New England Patriots game. There is also a slight overlap in October during playoff baseball when the Boston Red Sox are normally trying to cap off another World Series win before Halloween. I also follow the Boston Celtics and very recently rejoined the Boston Bruins fan base after a brief hiatus of rooting for a west coast hockey team.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside Arcadia?

I enjoy golfing, even though I may not be very good at it. Not only do I play golf, but I also caddy on the weekends at a local country club.

What makes Arcadia student-athletes special to you?

Seeing the hard work that they put in every day. When my office was in the gym, I would see the offseason workouts that were going on, as well as everyone getting in extra work with their teammates or on their own. Even though I don't see it as much anymore since my office moved, it is still great to see that when I walk through the gym. The culture of getting better every day is something that all of our athletes live by.

If you didn't work in college athletics, what would you be doing?

I honestly have no idea. Sports have been part of my life for as long as I can remember and are something I always wanted to be a part of what I do on a daily basis. Even when I wasn't working in college athletics, sports were still a part of it with the NIKE events we were running, but didn't feel the same. Even for the year between MKTG and Arcadia, the only jobs I was looking at were in college athletics, so I am grateful to have the opportunity to do what I do at Arcadia on a day-to-day basis.
